Tracking progress towards Europe's climate targets
In her talk Melanie Sporer will present an assessment approach for monitoring the progress of the EU and European countries towards achieving their climate mitigation policy objectives. The policy objectives include international commitments pursuant to the Kyoto Protocol and the EU 2020 commitment to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 20 % compared to 1990. The results of this year’s progress assessment were published in October 2013 in the EEA Report ‘Trends and projections in Europe 2013 – Tracking progress towards Europe's climate and energy targets until 2020’. Since the assessment is based on GHG data for the period 2008–2012, including recent estimates of proxy 2012 GHG emissions and GHG projections until 2020 submitted by Member States, the quality of national emission projections reported biennially by Member States for the purpose of progress monitoring over the last decade will be discussed as well.
Bio-sketch
Melanie Sporer is a project manager on climate change mitigation MRV (monitoring, reporting and verification) in the Climate Mitigation, Energy and Air pollution unit at the European Environment Agency (EEA) in Copenhagen, Denmark. She joined the European Environment Agency in 2012 where she plans and coordinates emission inventory reviews under EU legislation as part of the EEA review secretariat, leads the quality control and quality assurance system of national GHG emission projections and contributes to assessment reports on greenhouse gas and air pollutant emissions with a forward-looking focus. She studied environmental systems sciences and chemistry at Karl-Franzens University in Graz and University of Vienna.
